Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
March 1, 2026
Psalm 139:1-12
1 LORD, you have examined me. You know me. 2 You know when I sit down and when I stand up. Even from far away, you comprehend my plans. 3 You study my traveling and resting. You are thoroughly familiar with all my ways. 4 There isn’t a word on my tongue, LORD, that you don’t already know completely. 5 You surround me—front and back. You put your hand on me. 6 That kind of knowledge is too much for me; it’s so high above me that I can’t fathom it. 7 Where could I go to get away from your spirit? Where could I go to escape your presence? 8 If I went up to heaven, you would be there. If I went down to the grave, you would be there too! 9 If I could fly on the wings of dawn, stopping to rest only on the far side of the ocean 10 even there your hand would guide me; even there your strong hand would hold me tight! 11 If I said, “The darkness will definitely hide me; the light will become night around me,” 12 even then the darkness isn’t too dark for you! Nighttime would shine bright as day, because darkness is the same as light to you!
Good Morning, Happy Lord’s Day!
For me, the light represents hope and joy. Sometimes, during the winter, we have multiple dreary, cloudy days. We have to find alternative ways to find the light. One of my favorite ways is to light candles and watch the flame dance and flicker.
As I stare at the flame, I imagine the Holy Spirit moving within me. Sometimes the flame is strong and leaping high. Other times, it stands almost without movement. Then there are times when the flame seems to recede, almost extinguishing itself, but at the last moment it starts to grow once again.
This flame seems to mirror our faith journey as it ebbs and flows throughout our lives. Think of those times when you were on fire for the Lord. You felt strong and eager to share the Good News with others. Of course, we experience the doldrums when it seems as if we can barely take our next step, as that flame begins to sputter.
In these moments, the Holy Spirit increases the flow of oxygen to invigorate the flame once again. God sent us Jesus to be our eternal light. The light is always burning so that we may find our way home when the darkness seems to be growing around us. Look to the light!
God of Wisdom, you bless us abundantly! Many are shrouded in darkness. Help us keep our flame burning so that they can find the light of hope and joy. Thank you. We love you. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
Thought for the day: Even on our darkest days, the light of Christ shines to light our way.
Jesus said, I am the light! Pastor Liz
