Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

John 15:1-8

¹ “I am the true vine, and my Father is the vineyard keeper. ² He removes any of my branches that don’t produce fruit, and he trims any branch that produces fruit so that it will produce even more fruit. ³ You are already trimmed because of the word I have spoken to you. ⁴ Remain in me, and I will remain in you. A branch can’t produce fruit by itself, but must remain in the vine. Likewise, you can’t produce fruit unless you remain in me. ⁵ I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, then you will produce much fruit. Without me, you can’t do anything. ⁶ If you don’t remain in me, you will be like a branch that is thrown out and dries up. Those branches are gathered up, thrown into a fire, and burned. ⁷ If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask for whatever you want, and it will be done for you. ⁸ My Father is glorified when you produce much fruit and in this way prove that you are my disciples. 

Good Morning! In Christ, all things are possible!

When I consider my most desperate times, I recall times of being alone. Whether I was lost on a country road or entering a crowded room as a stranger, I felt great fear. In those moments, I only needed one landmark or familiar face to give me hope that everything was going to be okay. 

Of course, God promises that we are never alone. When we are in a relationship with God, we instinctively call on God to lead us. However, if we are not in a relationship with God, we feel completely alone at times. 

The imagery of me as the branches, Jesus as the vine to which I am attached, and God as the vineyard keeper who oversees everything is very comforting. I think about being the stranger in the crowded room, and how finding someone I know fills my heart and soul. 

God offers us the opportunity for constant fellowship. Even as the branches extend far beyond the vine, the life-sustaining energy comes from that branch. 

God of Love, you bless us abundantly! Thank you for loving us and being with us along our journeys. Thank you. We love you. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
