Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

June 6, 2022

Read Ephesians 2:1-10

1 At one time you were like a dead person because of the things you did wrong and your offenses against God. 2 You used to live like people of this world. You followed the rule of a destructive spiritual power. This is the spirit of disobedience to God’s will that is now at work in persons whose lives are characterized by disobedience. 3 At one time you were like those persons. All of you used to do whatever felt good and whatever you thought you wanted so that you were children headed for punishment just like everyone else. 4 - 5 However, God is rich in mercy. He brought us to life with Christ while we were dead as a result of those things that we did wrong. He did this because of the great love that he has for us. You are saved by God’s grace! 6 And God raised us up and seated us in the heavens with Christ Jesus. 7 God did this to show future generations the greatness of his grace by the goodness that God has shown us in Christ Jesus. 8 You are saved by God’s grace because of your faith. This salvation is God’s gift. It’s not something you possessed. 9 It’s not something you did that you can be proud of. 10 Instead, we are God’s accomplishment, created in Christ Jesus to do good things. God planned for these good things to be the way that we live our lives.

Good morning! We are saved by God’s grace!

What is love? We have our earthly definitions, but those pale in comparison to the love of God for us, his children. God gives us unconditional love through which we are saved from ourselves. Our God is rich in mercy and forgives all our sins.

Theologians love discussing God’s grace and our response to this grace. I believe in Wesley’s understanding of grace. Before we know Christ, we are under an umbrella of prevenient grace through which we receive God’s grace. This period is often described as a time when we are on the porch, but we haven’t yet knocked on the door. When we accept Christ, we enter justifying grace. We begin to develop our faith as we begin to learn about God. We have taken a step or initiated our relationship with Christ by knocking on the door. When we step through the door, we work to develop our faith as we move into fellowship with Christ through prayer, reading Scripture, and joining in the community of faith.

Each of these levels of grace is gifted to us. No one can do enough to earn God’s grace. As we accept God’s grace through faith, we begin to fill a need to respond to our gift. Our response is to share this gift with all. The more we share God’s gift, the greater the gift becomes. God created us to do good things. “Do all the good that you can . . . forever as long as you can.” John Wesley

Trust God to lead you where you are needed so that you may serve others as you share the love of Christ for the world.

Loving and Gracious God, Thank You for loving us. How many ways can we say thank you? We are sinful people who continue to hurt others, but you continue to love us. Thank you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: I will trust God to lead me where God needs me.
