Morning Devotional 101221 Shining in the Darkness

Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room

October 12, 2021

Read Matthew 5:13-16

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its saltiness, how will it become salty again? It’s good for nothing except to be thrown away and trampled under people’s feet. 14 You are the light of the world. A city on top of a hill can’t be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they put it on top of a lampstand, and it shines on all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before people, so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven.

Good Morning! This Little light of mine! I’m gonna let it shine!

What do people see when they look at you? We are called to be the mirror of Christ for the world to see. It is unfortunate that movies that depict Jesus often show him as this calm, almost Zombie, moving from place to place. When I read the Gospels, I see Jesus as a living, loving person who gets frustrated (when his disciples can’t see what is before them), who moves quickly from place to place, who reaches out and loves everyone, and who openly glows with the light of the Holy Spirit.

Christ is the embodiment of God’s love. I imagine that to be in the presence of Jesus is electrifying, not in a big shock way, but in a nice tingly way. Last spring, I had a teacher next door to my classroom, who asked me multiple times how I could be so happy despite the fact that things at school were not normal and I was so busy with church and school and sports and my NASA program. My answer to her was that I was so happy because of all those things and that the Holy Spirit was leading me to share God’s love.

Everything we do and everyone we meet is an opportunity to share God. Turn on your heart light and share Christ with all you meet. If you take the time to look, there is a silver lining hiding within each challenge. You never know when your smile and show of kindness will be the starting point to change the life of someone in need.

Loving God, Thank You for loving us. Sometimes we can get caught up in the chaos around us and become part of the problem. Help us to stay centered with Your light glowing from within us for all to see. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: My positive attitude can share the light of Christ with others.

Be the light! Let it shine! Pastor Liz
