Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
January 22, 2026
Matthew 5:13-16
13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if salt loses its saltiness, how will it become salty again? It’s good for nothing except to be thrown away and trampled under people’s feet. 14 You are the light of the world. A city on top of a hill can’t be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they put it on top of a lampstand, and it shines on all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before people, so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven.
Good Morning! Shine, Jesus, Shine. Let there be light!
There is something about the light! Scientifically, we need the sun for the light and energy it produces. This describes our physical need, but we also need the light emotionally and spiritually. As I sit and watch the beautiful sunrise this morning, my spirits are lifted as the sun raises upward. I watch the changes around me as the birds usher in a new day.
I remember Januarys in Indiana. Those were typically cloudy days with little sunshine visible. I recall one January where a newscaster announced this would be day 20 without seeing the sun. Studies show that those who live in areas with extended periods of darkness or even heavy cloud cover experience depression and intense anxiety.
Jesus came to bring the light to God’s people. This light is implanted in all who accept Christ as Lord and Savior. We are called to let our light shine before all people. God’s light provides us with the ability to see goodness even in times of darkness.
I pray that you know a standard bearer of the light. One of God’s children who boldly lets the light and love of Jesus shine for all to see. Our goal is to be that beacon of light for those who are lost and stumbling in the dark.
Redeeming Lord, you bless us abundantly! Your light opens our eyes. Help us accept our calling to be your light for others. Thank you. We love you. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
Thought for the day: Jesus’ light shines through us to others when we focus on him.
Be the light! Pastor Liz
