Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
Feb. 9, 2025
1 John 4:13-18
13 This is how we know we remain in him and he remains in us, because he has given us a measure of his Spirit. 14 We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the savior of the world. 15 If any of us confess that Jesus is God’s Son, God remains in us and we remain in God. 16 We have known and have believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who remain in love remain in God and God remains in them. 17 This is how love has been perfected in us, so that we can have confidence on the Judgment Day, because we are exactly the same as God is in this world. 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love drives out fear, because fear expects punishment. The person who is afraid has not been made perfect in love.
Good Morning. God is love!
The most important thing to remember is God loves us! No matter what struggles we face or what mistakes we make, God loves us. When the Holy Spirit descends upon us at our baptism, that is God becoming a part of our being.
Think of a gift you received long ago, and you still have it. Why do you still have it? Isn’t it old and maybe less pristine than when you received it? There are some gifts that, despite their age, gain value over time. This gift might be a family heirloom with a history that increases its value.
God’s love is an amazing gift. When we keep it with us and use it, it grows in size and value. It never tarnishes or becomes outdated. This gift has an incredible story: the greatest story ever told. God, our creator, loves us so much he sent his only son to die for us so that we might gain eternal life.
Even when we forget or turn away from God’s love, it is there awaiting our rediscovery when we most need to find it. Thanks be to God for loving us. God makes us perfect in love.
Loving Lord, Maker of all things! You love us! We are unworthy, yet you love us anyway. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God’s love sustains us forever.
No greater love! Pastor Liz
