Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

Philippians 1:22-26
22 If I continue to live in this world, I get results from my work. 23 But I don’t know what I prefer. I’m torn between the two because I want to leave this life and be with Christ, which is far better. 24 However, it’s more important for me to stay in this world for your sake. 25 I’m sure of this: I will stay alive and remain with all of you to help your progress and the joy of your faith, 26 and to increase your pride in Christ Jesus through my presence when I visit you again.
Good Morning. Embrace the joy of your faith!
Paul is sharing what God has called him to do with the church at Philippi. He is to preach the word and nurture the faith of this body of believers. Paul’s life was dramatically changed on the road to Damascus when he heard God’s word for his life. He saw how wonderful life would be when he joined Christ.
He also knew that in God’s time, he would be called home, but until then, God called him to preach the Word so that others might be saved. The Psalmist reminds us to spend time in prayer with God as long as we have breath. 1 I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy. Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!
The idea of God leaning into our prayers is great imagery to show the reciprocal aspect of our relationship. God invites us to lean in when we feel weak or afraid. Likewise, God leans in to focus and listen to our prayers.
We are called to share the joy and preach the word of Christ as long as we have breath. When my sweet husband continued to preach when his body was being consumed by cancer, someone asked him why he didn’t just go on disability. He responded strongly, “God is calling me to preach as long as I have breath.” He preached, and then he went to join with God!
Loving Lord, Maker of all things! You love us! You call us to serve you. May we listen to your calling. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Share the love and joy of God every minute of our lives.
As long as I Have Breath, I will praise God! Pastor Liz
