Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room
March 20, 2022
Read Genesis 1:1-5
1 When God began to create the heavens and the earth 2 the earth was without shape or form, it was dark over the deep sea, and God’s wind swept over the waters 3 God said, “Let there be light.” And so light appeared. 4 God saw how good the light was. God separated the light from the darkness. 5 God named the light Day and the darkness Night. There was evening and there was morning: the first day.
Good Morning, Celebrate today!
From God’s first day, many days have sprung, and many generations have come and gone to join God. As a people, we celebrate first days. Imagine living on the threshold of some new “day” designated as the first day of . . . As I consider historic markers, I remember watching and listening as people prepared for the first day of this century. First, there were parties to bid the 20th-century good-bye and then there were parties to usher in the new century. For many, this was a time of apprehension. Remember the Y2K scare!
For each beginning, there is an ending and each has its own potential rewards and challenges. The biggest challenge for me in beginning and endings is waiting with the uncertainty of the what-ifs. I have been known to fret or obsess a bit during these times. Last year at this very time of year, I was preparing for a move that I knew was coming, but I was missing so many pieces to the puzzle. After all, I was moving not only physically, but emotionally, and spiritually. Whoa! So many possibilities that it made my head spin.
Where will I live, what church(es) will I serve, and back to where will I live. Of course, there were the underlying big-picture worries of whether I was ready for all of this. I was very accepting of my calling and the excitement that anticipation created, I just wanted to know more about the logistical events. The funny thing is that looking back I know that I trusted God, but I wasn’t quite ready to turn over all of my worries.
In the midst of transition, it is easy to get caught up in worrying about the small stuff. God is there to provide for us and open unexpected pathways to lead us to where we are called.
Loving and Gracious God, Thank You for loving us. We struggle with our trust issues. We trust you for the big picture stuff, but we still want to control the little things. Help us to let go and believe fully in You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God is with me in all my beginnings and endings.
It is a new day! Pastor Liz
