Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

March 22, 2023

Read Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

1 There’s a season for everything and a time for every matter under the heavens: 2 a time for giving birth and a time for dying, a time for planting and a time for uprooting what was planted, 3 a time for killing and a time for healing, a time for tearing down and a time for building up, 4 a time for crying and a time for laughing, a time for mourning and a time for dancing, 5 a time for throwing stones and a time for gathering stones, a time for embracing and a time for avoiding embraces, 6 a time for searching and a time for losing, a time for keeping and a time for throwing away, 7 a time for tearing and a time for repairing, a time for keeping silent and a time for speaking, 8 a time for loving and a time for hating, a time for war and a time for peace.

Good Morning, For everything, there is a time!

For those of you who know me, this probably won’t come as a shock, but my first remembrance of this hearing this passage transports me back to my childhood and the 1960s. As an adult looking back on those turbulent years, it is fascinating that a rock band whose members sported long hair that violated the “family-value” norms of the time could record a song with lyrics based on Scripture and it reach number 3 on the pop charts.

The success of this song resembles the paradox engrained in the words and meaning of this passage. For everything, there is a season that specifies all opposites paradoxically aligned in our worldly existence. The longer I continue my earthly walk, the more I appreciate the application of Ecclesiastes 3 in my life.

When my friends and I sang along with The Byrds, we were so young and not ready to do more than learn the lyrics and enjoy a nice tune, but what an unrealized connection this song would provide for me all of these years later. I find a special connection this week as our Rose Park family prepares to return to worship services in our newly purposed Little Rose Park Chapel. Two months ago, it was a time to leave, and now it's a time to return; it was a time to be sad, and now it’s a time of joy,

It is important to remember that God doesn’t make our challenges and heartaches but uses these moments to allow something beautiful to spring forth. When I consider the difficulties and the blessings of the past two months, I can only fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun, and pray, O Lord, have mercy on me.

One final thought, it is easy to think, wow, that’s a good passage to pop up for today! How appropriate! I believe the random things I encounter are part of God’s mysterious ways. The way this passage touched me today reflects where I am today, March 22, at 7:00 a.m. in Madison, VA.

Blessed God, We thank you for Your blessings. By your grace, we endure the storms in our life so that we may find the gentle rain to wash away our sins. In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: Brokenness allows for new and beautiful growth.
