Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
March 28, 2026
Luke 12:27-31
27 Notice how the lilies grow. They don’t wear themselves out with work, and they don’t spin cloth. But I say to you that even Solomon in all his splendor wasn’t dressed like one of these. 28 If God dresses grass in the field so beautifully, even though it’s alive today and tomorrow it’s thrown into the furnace, how much more will God do for you, you people of weak faith! 29 Don’t chase after what you will eat and what you will drink. Stop worrying. 30 All the nations of the world long for these things. Your Father knows that you need them. 31 Instead, desire his kingdom and these things will be given to you as well.
Good Morning! Stop worrying!
Easily said, but hard to do! We have great intentions, yet we still worry about things. We read books on how to let go of our worries, like Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff and How to Stop Worrying and Start Living. People quote great words, like let go and let God to no avail. We even turn our worries to God, and then take them right back again.
We seem to be the people of weak faith to whom Jesus is speaking. I wonder if there is a magic number of times God takes care of us that allows us to trust fully and stop worrying. When we are born, we have no choice but to trust others for our well-being, but as we grow and develop independence, we want to take charge.
Think of a toddler who suddenly refuses to hold your hand when crossing the street. He or she proudly says, “I can do it myself!” This is the beginning of our desire/need to tackle life head-on. Honestly, this is necessary for survival, but as in most things, we get carried away.
At some point, we develop trust with someone, and then that trust is broken. The more times this happens (and it does), the less trusting we become. Of course, we are basing our understanding of trust on humans who are all sinful and flawed.
Jesus came to be our role model of who we should aspire to be. He showed us how to love and trust, but like that stubborn toddler, we resist trusting. Just as our independence grew over time, we must work to grow our trust in God. We have to let go of our preconceptions and misconceptions (which is hard), and know that God is with us in all things and at all times.
Twila Paris wrote a song titled "Do I Trust You?" These lyrics lead me forward when I question whether I can trust God.
I will trust You, Lord, when I don't know why.
I will trust You, Lord, till the day I die.
I will trust You, Lord, when I'm blind with pain!
You were God before, and You'll never change.
I will trust you, Lord, I will trust you.
God of Wisdom, you bless us abundantly! We know you love us and care for us, but we forget to trust you in all things. Thank you for sending Jesus to save us. We love you. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
Thought for the day: God offers comfort and assurance as we navigate the unknown.
Let go and Let God! Pastor Liz
