Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
April 1, 2022
Read Psalm 8:1-9
1 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name throughout the earth! You made your glory higher than heaven! 2 From the mouths of nursing babies you have laid a strong foundation because of your foes, in order to stop vengeful enemies. 3 When I look up at your skies, at what your fingers made the moon and the stars that you set firmly in place 4 what are human beings that you think about them; what are human beings that you pay attention to them? 5 You’ve made them only slightly less than divine, crowning them with glory and grandeur. 6 You’ve let them rule over your handiwork, putting everything under their feet 7 all sheep and all cattle, the wild animals too, 8 the birds in the sky, the fish of the ocean, everything that travels the pathways of the sea. 9 LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name throughout the earth!
Good Morning, O Lord, how majestic is your name throughout the earth!
What a blessing times of rest are for the body and especially our souls! With spring break approaching, I already feel the burdens of my daily expectations being lifted. Great Psalms of thanksgiving are a blessed way to approach this new day. God’s majesty surrounds us for as far as the eye can see and even beyond. As an ever-advancing technological society, we can now see further into the universe than anyone before us. We each new discovery that is announced, I marvel at God’s wondrous works.
As a lifelong space enthusiast, I eagerly listen to the accounts of each group of space “tourists” that have had the privilege of traveling to space in Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin capsule. The awe of seeing the earth is very evident in all of their interviews. That moment at 62 miles “up” when everything around them becomes black and they see the earth (the blue marble) glistening among the blackness, words become hard to form. William Shatner describes his experience: “Oh my God. it’s indescribable,” Shatner told Bezos after returning to Earth. “To see the blue color [of the atmosphere] shoot by like that. . . It is so moving. I never expected it.”
Despite the immensity of God’s creation and God’s power, he still cares for each living thing. God’s love and care for us, who were formed in his image, is evidenced by God’s sending his only Son to walk among us and to teach us the ways to love and care for one another. There are those who doubt the existence of a supreme being, yet God’s signs are everywhere. God is among us and God knows each of us by name: See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands; your walls are ever before me. Isaiah 49:16
I leave you this morning singing the beautiful gospel hymn “His Eye is On the Sparrow, and I know he cares for me.”
[BTW: I’m looking for someone to fund my seat of the Blue Origin so that I can share this experience with all of you. :)]
Loving and Gracious God, Thank You for loving us. You are an awesome God. We can’t fathom how you keep everything together. Thank you for knowing us by name. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Even though I am just a small part of the universe, God cares deeply for me.
I sing because I’m happy! Pastor Liz
