Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
May 13, 2023
Psalm 86:1-7
1 LORD, listen closely to me and answer me because I am poor and in need. 2 Guard my life because I am faithful. Save your servant who trusts in you—you! My God! 3 Have mercy on me, Lord, because I cry out to you all day long. 4 Make your servant’s life happy again because, my Lord, I offer my life to you, 5 because, my Lord, you are good and forgiving, full of faithful love for all those who cry out to you. 6 Listen closely to my prayer, LORD; pay close attention to the sound of my requests for mercy. 7 Whenever I am in trouble, I cry out to you because you will answer me.
Good Morning; Our God is an awesome God!
We are God’s children, and God wants to be in a relationship with us. One of the blessings of being a family is being together. Another is knowing each other. Even when we’ve been separated for a while, there is a historical connection, and being together feels right and comfortable.
This happens in places as well. I call central Indiana my home even though I wasn’t born there, and I have now lived in Virginia much longer than in Indiana. Don’t get me wrong, I love Virginia; it is my second home. When I make the long trip “home,” I feel connected to this place where I own no physical property. After all, I lived my formative years in Indiana, and because of that, it feels right and comfortable.
The sights, sounds, and smells fill me with memories that sustain me: cornfields as far as the eye can see, the squeaking of shoes on a gym floor, and the odors of cooking, canning, and baking drifting from the kitchen. Even the dark, rich soil has a special place in my heart.
Perhaps I own what I’m going to label “spiritual property” in Indiana. In addition to the memories of family and friends, this is where I met Lowell, and we fell in love and were married. Our first two children were born in Indiana. I discovered my gift of music as I spent many hours in lessons and practice. Finally, this is where I first met Christ and began my faith journey. So many firsts that are a significant part of my foundation. Indiana is where I gave my life to God and chose to follow Christ wherever he led me.
After many twists and turns on my pathway of faith, God led me to Virginia, and thirty years later, I received and accepted the special call to become a pastor. I know whom I believe! My Lord, I offer my life to you, 5 because, my Lord, you are good and forgiving, full of faithful love for all those who cry out to you.
Our God is an awesome God! AMEN!
Blessed God, We thank you for Your blessings. Spending time in prayer with You feels so good. It feels like home. Thank You! In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God always listens to my prayers.
God is with us! Pastor Liz
