Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
May 29, 2022
Read Nehemiah 8:9-12
9 Then Nehemiah the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all of the people, “This day is holy to the LORD your God. Don’t mourn or weep.” They said this because all the people wept when they heard the words of the Instruction. 10 “Go, eat rich food, and drink something sweet,” he said to them, “and send portions of this to any who have nothing ready! This day is holy to our LORD. Don’t be sad, because the joy from the LORD is your strength!” 11 The Levites also calmed all of the people, saying, “Be quiet, for this day is holy. Don’t be sad!” 12 Then all of the people went to eat and to drink, to send portions, and to have a great celebration because they understood what had been said to them.
Good Morning, This is the day the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it!
Sometimes I accept and even seek out too much to do! Those who know me are probably laughing at this. I like to be busy, and the activities that I’m part of allow me to joyfully serve God’s children. I will admit that from time to time I step over the line separating what is the correct amount and what is too much.
In my younger years, when I was overly committed, I would grit my teeth and muddle through because I was too stubborn or too proud to not fulfill my obligations. My sons call this my “Midwest Sensibility”. Admittedly, when I was in the midst of these crazy times, I became less than settled. Eventually, things settled down and I promised myself that I would not do that again (over-commit). Well, maybe one more time won’t hurt! HMMM!
One of my blessings in aging is realizing when to say no, or even that it is okay to not “do” everything. I still stay busy, but I work to keep a gentle balance between my activities and my quiet time with God. My morning devotional time has become my favorite time of day and I fervently protect this special time. When I start to feel stressed, I praise God and focus on how I am blessed.
As I embrace a new direction in my life, I know that God will provide for me. We must never forget to take time and be Holy.
Loving and Gracious God, Thank You for loving us. In our noisy, busy world, help us take time to see You in our lives. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Today I will seek God first.
Take time to breathe! Pastor Liz
