Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
May 30, 2022
Read Mark 13:28-37
28 “Learn this parable from the fig tree. After its branch becomes tender and it sprouts new leaves, you know that summer is near. 29 In the same way, when you see these things happening, you know that he’s near, at the door. 30 I assure you that this generation won’t pass away until all these things happen. 31 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will certainly not pass away. 32 “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be alert! You do not know when that time will come. 34 It’s like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge, each with their assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. 35 “Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone: ‘Watch!’”
Good Morning, Blessed is the Lord!
Today’s passage reminds us to look for signs of God working among us and that earthly things will pass, but God’s Word is forever. My family and I have moved a lot of times over the years. Even though I have not lived in Indiana for many years, I am still drawn to return to the places where I grew up.
Wilkinson was and is a small rural town. Although, there is a Dollar General there now. When I drive through town, some of the places I remember are gone: my school has been torn down, some businesses have closed or changed, and even my home church is no longer an active church. I no longer know who lives in the houses where I spent so much time as a child and teenager.
Despite all that has changed, I feel a sense of comfort as I drive by and remember. I remember marching down Main Street with my Jr. High School Band, riding my bike, laughing and talking with friends, learning to drive, and youth events at church. These memories are part of who I am, and the faces of all those who shaped and nurtured me are with me. It is not about the physical buildings, but what happened within those places.
God’s handiwork surrounds us and guides us through the seasons of our lives. Just as the fig tree springs to life each year, we continue along our path of faith until we are called to be with our Lord. Thanks be to God.
Loving and Gracious God, Thank You for loving us. For everything, there is a season for which You have a plan. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: The love I share in the name of Christ lives forever.
Look and See the Signs of God! Pastor Liz
