Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
June 11, 2023
Psalm 32:8-11
8 I will instruct you and teach you about the direction you should go. I’ll advise you and keep my eye on you. 9 Don’t be like some senseless horse or mule, whose movement must be controlled with a bit and a bridle. Don’t be anything like that! 10 The pain of the wicked is severe, but faithful love surrounds the one who trusts the LORD. 11 You who are righteous, rejoice in the LORD and be glad! All you whose hearts are right, sing out in joy
Good Morning, This is the day that the Lord has made! Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
For the believers, the faithful, trusting God seems like a given, yet we struggle with the idea of trust. Perhaps this lack of trust begins with our earthly relationships. As infants and young children, we trust that someone will care for us and tend to our needs. Somewhere along our path, we place our trust in someone who doesn’t complete their obligation. Maybe a classmate or a friend who promises to do something at a specified time or a phone call that never happens.
Slowly, we have more examples of misguided trust that affect us, and we begin to doubt the promises of others. I guess that most of us have had that moment when we decided to handle things by ourselves because you can’t be disappointed in others if you don’t include them in your plan.
Sadly, this progression of trust issues also pervades our relationship with God. We believe in God and trust that he has our best interests at heart, and then something unimaginable happens, and we pray to God. In our simple understanding of faith, we believe that God will immediately answer our prayers in the way that we expect. We begin to doubt our faith when we believe our prayers were ignored.
Sometimes we become like the senseless mule in the passage and think that God has left us to care for ourselves, so we turn our back on God and walk away. Because of our pride, it takes time for us to admit our own stubbornness, but when we are ready, God is waiting to welcome us home. All you whose hearts are right, sing out in joy.
God is listening! We have difficulty seeing that our prayers are answered when they are answered in a way other than what we imagine. God’s ways are not ours, and God’s time is not ours. . . . faithful love surrounds the one who trusts the LORD.
Amazing God, We thank you for Your blessings. You are with us every moment of every day. Help us trust in your love and mercy. We Thank You! In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God’s love and comfort surround me always.
The joy of the Lord is my strength! Pastor Liz
