Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
June 18, 2024
Luke 10:38-42
38 While Jesus and his disciples were traveling, Jesus entered a village where a woman named Martha welcomed him as a guest. 39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his message. 40 By contrast, Martha was preoccupied with getting everything ready for their meal. So Martha came to him and said, “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to prepare the table all by myself? Tell her to help me.” 41 The Lord answered, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things. 42 One thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the better part. It won’t be taken away from her.”
Good Morning! Focus on what is necessary!
41 The Lord answered, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and distracted by many things.
Ask yourself this morning how many times you should put your name in place of Martha’s. We are worried and distracted by many things. In an effort to make everything just right, we lose focus on what is important. We are busy asking questions like, “What should I wear? Or What should I serve?” instead of focusing on why we are doing this.
When we start with why, everything else falls into place. Why are we going? We will see a family member from whom we have been separated. Why are we feeding our neighbor? We are feeding our neighbors because they are hungry.
If someone is hungry, they will not examine what you’re wearing or whether you put out your finest china. They will simply be grateful to eat. Any food is welcome by someone who hungers.
When people hunger for spiritual peace and understanding, they look for a way to let go of their worries and distractions. As a church family, do we focus on making our buildings look fancy or meeting the needs of those who enter? Those searching feel lost and need love and grace in whatever setting is offered.
Jesus said, Peter, do you love me . . . Feed my lambs. Peter, do you love me . . . take care of my sheep. Peter, do you love me . . .Feed my sheep.
This is our why! We do these things because we love our Lord, who first loves us.
Creator God, Thank you for this beautiful gift of life. O Lord, we get lost in the things that are unimportant. Lead us so that we find our way. We thank you! In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: We can find rest in God when we clear out spiritual clutter.
Feed and care for God’s children! Pastor Liz
