Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

June 21, 2025

Psalm 121

1 I raise my eyes toward the mountains. Where will my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth. 3 God won’t let your foot slip. Your protector won’t fall asleep on the job. 4 No! Israel’s protector never sleeps or rests! 5 The LORD is your protector; the LORD is your shade right beside you. 6 The sun won’t strike you during the day; neither will the moon at night. 7 The LORD will protect you from all evil; God will protect your very life. 8 The LORD will protect you on your journeys whether going or coming from now until forever from now.

Good Morning! God’s handiwork surrounds us!

When we are born, we are totally dependent upon others to provide our care. As we grow, we desire to take over responsibility for ourselves. Young children show their independence as they learn to turn over, crawl, and walk. Each experience develops the synapses to take the next step. They begin to venture out a little further, believing they can retreat to the protection of their parents if they get scared.

Throughout our lives, we encounter moments when we feel the need for protection. I recall the profound relief that fills my entire being when I see a familiar face among a crowd of strangers, or when I find a recognizable landmark amid an unfamiliar landscape.

It’s interesting that we often seem to bury the ability to run to our parents (our protector) that we had when we were young. As we age, we value our independence so much that we would rather struggle on our own than admit that we need help. We become victims of the voice in our head that shouts, “You can do this!” or “Only weaklings ask for help!”

God is waiting to help all who call upon Jesus’ holy name. God’s handiwork provides us with visible reminders of the power that lies waiting within us. No appointment is necessary to access God. God provides the relief for which we yearn now and forever more. The first step to finding God’s peace is to humble ourselves and admit our weaknesses.

Giving Lord, you bless us abundantly! We struggle with asking for help. Help us to admit our needs and accept all you offer us. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: God can lead us through any difficult situation.

Immediate care awaits those who ask! Pastor Liz
