Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
July 20, 2025
Job 5:8-16
8 But I would seek God, put my case to God, 9 who does great things beyond comprehension, wonderful things without number; 10 who provides rain over the earth’s surface, sends water to the open country, 11 exalts the lowly, raises mourners to victory; 12 who frustrates the schemes of the clever so that their hands achieve no success, 13 trapping the wise in their cleverness so that the plans of the devious don’t succeed. 14 They encounter darkness during the day, and at noon they fumble about as at night. 15 Yet he rescues the orphan from the sword of their mouth, the needy from the grip of the strong; 16 so the poor have hope and violence shuts its mouth.
Good Morning! Happy Lord’s Day
O Lord, you are my God, and I will always follow you! Our passage from Job this morning reminds us of the immensity of God’s glory.
I consider myself an excellent multitasker. I seem to be at my best when I’m juggling and manipulating many things concurrently. The challenge with multitasking is keeping control of all the balls you throw into the air. A slight misstep might be manageable, but one errant ball and the whole thing comes crashing down.
When I examine the list of God’s tasks that Job provides, I bow in wonder at how God can keep everything in balance.
Does great things (beyond comprehension)
Provides rain
Sends water
Exalts the lowly
Raises mourners
Frustrates the schemes of the clever
Traps the wise in their cleverness
Rescues the orphan
Serves the needy
Gives hope
Silences violence
And, oh yeah, God is with us always, listening to and answering our prayers . . .
What a mighty God we serve! If God is with us, then who is against us? Through Christ, we are worthy to call ourselves children of God!
Giving Lord, you bless us abundantly! We never know what tomorrow brings, but we know that you will be with us to guide us each step of the way. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God is good! All the time!
God, the consummate multitasker, loves us and knows us by name! Pastor Liz
