Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

August 3, 2023

Psalm 29:7-11

7 The LORD’s voice unleashes fiery flames; 8 the LORD’s voice shakes the wilderness yes, the LORD shakes the wilderness of Kadesh. 9 The LORD’s voice convulses the oaks, strips the forests bare, but in his temple everyone shouts, “Glory!” 10 The LORD sits enthroned over the floodwaters; the LORD sits enthroned—king forever! 11 Let the LORD give strength to his people! Let the LORD bless his people with peace!

Good Morning, It’s a new day! Seek God’s peace!

This week’s weather has been such a welcome respite from the dog days of summer. It’s amazing how easy it is to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors when it’s just a few degrees cooler.

The voice of God is described in this Psalm as being mighty when it shakes the wilderness and strips the trees bare. I find this as an interesting contrast to the story of Elijah in the cave when God’s voice was not in the fire, the earthquake, or the great wind but as a still, small voice.

I started to think of other examples of God’s voice in the New Testament. When Jesus is baptized, God opens the heavens in Luke 3:21-22 to announce the identity of the man from Galilee who has just emerged from the baptismal waters. Then again, in Luke 9:35 at the transfiguration: “A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” During Pentecost in Acts 2, we hear of the mighty voice through the flame and the rush of wind.

Perhaps, like our earthly parents, the situation somewhat determines how God speaks to us. During the chaos that often swirls around us, God comes with a mighty voice so that we might know that it is time to listen. During our times of despair, God comes as a still, quiet voice to bring us comfort and peace. Most importantly, God is with us always in all situations. When we wonder where God is, we need to retune our station and turn our focus back to God. God remains steadfast when our love fails, and we turn away from God. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Romans 38-39

Loving God, We thank you! You love us even when we think that you have gone away. Help us hear your voice calling to us. Thank you! In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: I will remember that God rules over even the difficult times in my life.
