Morning Devotional 080424 Which Path?

Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

  August 4, 2024

Matthew 7:13-14

13 “Go in through the narrow gate. The gate that leads to destruction is broad and the road wide, so many people enter through it. 14 But the gate that leads to life is narrow and the road difficult, so few people find it.

Good Morning! Morning has broken! Rejoice in the moment!

This passage brings many images to my mind this morning. In our need to fit in, we often go with the crowd without thinking about our own thoughts. They’re all doing it, it must be the right thing to do. Remember the old cliche repeated by parents after their child made a poor choice: If everyone jumped off a cliff, would you jump too?

How many times have you walked into a room full of mostly strangers? Did you wander over to one of the larger groups, or did you choose to sit at a table with one other person? Those large groups offer earthly recognition. To be part of the in-crowd is to join with those who seek recognition. When they serve others, it is to elevate themselves, not those they serve.

The gateway that leads to a good life is sometimes covered with vines from disuse. Maybe the path has broken bricks created by the roots of an abandoned tree. We are often unsure of our choice when it seems to lead us away from the crowd or the things we know, but God will be with all who choose this path and enter through His gate.

Loving God, Thank you for creating us. We like being part of the popular crowd. Help us see that your way will lead us to eternal life. Thank you for loving us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: The road to abundant living and eternal life is laid out in God’s word.

Which path will you choose? Pastor Liz
