Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
August 20, 2022
Read 2 Corinthians 3:1-7
3 May the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ be blessed! He is the compassionate Father and God of all comfort. 4 He’s the one who comforts us in all our trouble so that we can comfort other people who are in every kind of trouble. We offer the same comfort that we ourselves received from God. 5 That is because we receive so much comfort through Christ in the same way that we share so many of Christ’s sufferings. 6 So if we have trouble, it is to bring you comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is to bring you comfort from the experience of endurance while you go through the same sufferings that we also suffer. 7 Our hope for you is certain, because we know that as you are partners in suffering, so also you are partners in comfort.
Good morning! Rejoice for we are blessed.
I find fog very interesting. I become anxious when I’m driving in dense fog, but when I’m safely at home I like to walk out and see how things look differently on a foggy early morning. This morning my plants and trees are veiled by the fog. The fog hides the roughness and flaws of the tree bark. The rough edges appear to be smooth.
This conversation is leading me to 1 Corinthians 13:12, 12 For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. (KJV) I don’t often prefer the language of the KJV, but for this passage the poetic imagery of the glass darkly is powerful.
As we journey along our path of faith, we look with hope to our eternal glory. What we see is veiled or viewed as if looking through a glass darkly or through the fog. When we arrive face to face the veil of the fog will be lifted and we will see clearly.
For now, we are blessed with God’s love, mercy, and comfort, but it is not yet time for us to see clearly. Each day whether good or bad, Christ is with us to lead us through the fog so that we might never lose sight of the light.
Perhaps the fog also masks our rough edges. The Holy Spirit within us is working to reveal the being that God sees within us, but each great work requires much molding and smoothing before the final product is ready to behold.
Loving and Caring God, Thank You for loving us. We know that we are flawed and we thank you, Lord, for allowing us time for our transformation. Sometimes we need the fog to soften our current selves. Thank You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: I can see evidence of God’s love for me everywhere.
God is Good! All the Time! Pastor Liz
