Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
August 23, 2022
Read Psalm 139:7-12
7 Where could I go to get away from your spirit? Where could I go to escape your presence? 8 If I went up to heaven, you would be there. If I went down to the grave, you would be there too! 9 If I could fly on the wings of dawn, stopping to rest only on the far side of the ocean 10 even there your hand would guide me; even there your strong hand would hold me tight! 11 If I said, “The darkness will definitely hide me; the light will become night around me,” 12 even then the darkness isn’t too dark for you! Nighttime would shine bright as day, because darkness is the same as light to you!
Good morning! God will find us whenever we are lost!
Psalm 139 has special resonance to me. Many years ago, I received an anthem based upon Psalm 139. The first time I played and sang through it, I got goosebumps. The composer did a masterful job painting the text with the melody he created. It started out gently for the first verses that talk about the Lord searching us and being with us when we rise and when we lie down. The melody gradually builds to this magnificent climax as David recognizes that God is with him no matter what.
God is with us! If God is with us, then who can be against us. Even when we feel the most lost, God finds us and comforts us. Praise be to God! God doesn’t require for us to clean up our lives before we call out for help. God takes us where we are at that moment when we are ready and immediately comforts us and provides someone to care for our physical needs. When we are ready, God is waiting for us to surrender our lives so that our transformation can begin. Thank you God for your grace and mercy.
Gracious God, Thank You for loving us. We struggle with turning over control to you. Sometimes we think that we can hide our failures from you. Thank you for accepting us despite our flaws and being the loving parent who waits for us to realize that we need You. Thank You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble” (Ps. 46:1).
God is With Us! Pastor Liz
