Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
September 2, 2022
Read: Psalm 9:9-20
9 The LORD is a safe place for the oppressed, a safe place in difficult times. 10 Those who know your name trust you because you have not abandoned any who seek you, LORD. 11 Sing praises to the LORD, who lives in Zion! Proclaim his mighty acts among all people! 12 Because the one who avenges bloodshed remembers those who suffer; the LORD hasn’t forgotten their cries for help. 13 Have mercy on me, LORD! Just look how I suffer because of those who hate me. But you are the one who brings me back from the very gates of death 14 so I can declare all your praises, so I can rejoice in your salvation in the gates of Daughter Zion. 15 The nations have fallen into the hole they themselves made! Their feet are caught in the very net they themselves hid! 16 The LORD is famous for the justice he has done; it’s his own doing that the wicked are trapped. Higgayon. Selah 17 Let the wicked go straight to the grave, the same for every nation that forgets God. 18 Because the poor won’t be forgotten forever, the hope of those who suffer won’t be lost for all time. 19 Get up, LORD! Don’t let people prevail! Let the nations be judged before you. 20 Strike them with fear, LORD. Let the nations know they are only human. Selah
Good morning! Rejoice! Again I say Rejoice!
Yesterday, we had a glorious celebration of life for Joyce aka Grandma Petry. She touched so many lives through her years on earth, and now she has gone to be with her Lord. Through her witness during her journey, she shared the love and mercy that Christ shared with her. Please pray for traveling mercies to all the family members returning home over the next few days.
In this passage, David is feeling anxious. Even the great King David, chosen ruler of the Israelite people, had times of anxiety because like us David was human. It is good for us to see that even those with a strong relationship with God as evidenced by the writings of David have moments of uncertainty or worry. David seems to be telling God what to do.
Our God is an awesome God who sees and knows everything happening around us. God is ready for us to turn all of our worries over, so that we can make room for the peace that God promises to us. I appreciate that David’s words represent a long-standing relationship through which he can share his own thoughts and feelings with God.
God wants that kind of relationship with each of us. Not a formal, awkward relationship where our words are carefully formed within our conversations, but a natural relationship through which words flow freely. We develop this relationship by spending time with God on a regular basis. Sometimes we have much to say, other times we just listen, but through it all God is waiting and watching for us to come home.
Gracious God, Thank You for loving us. You are always here. You are listening and talking whenever we need You. Thank You. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: On my darkest days, God’s light is still with me.
Happy is the home when God is present! Pastor Liz
