Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
September 25, 2023
Psalm 121:1-8
1 I raise my eyes toward the mountains. Where will my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth. 3 God won’t let your foot slip. Your protector won’t fall asleep on the job. 4 No! Israel’s protector never sleeps or rests! 5 The LORD is your protector; the LORD is your shade right beside you. 6 The sun won’t strike you during the day; neither will the moon at night. 7 The LORD will protect you from all evil; God will protect your very life. 8 The LORD will protect you on your journeys, whether going or coming from now until forever from now.
Good Morning. Take Time to Praise the Lord!
I spent my formative years in the flat lands of Indiana. My parents were born and raised in the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky, and they had a special attachment to the mountains. Whenever they would travel “home,” they would anxiously await the moment when they saw their first glimpse of the mountains off in the distance. They would release a collective sigh.
For me and Lowell, the ocean was what called us home. Whenever we would get to make trips to the beach, we would roll down the windows when we could first smell the salty air, and then when we arrived, we would jump out of the car and rush to the edge of the ocean and just sigh.
For the past ten years, I have been blessed to live in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, and have learned that the mountains provide their own special calling to me. Now, when I travel to Indiana, I miss the mountains, and I eagerly look forward to that first glimpse when I return home. I see the mountains, and I sigh.
In both the mountains and the ocean, I can immerse myself in the majestic grandeur of God. In those moments, I feel the power of God’s love and grace surrounding me, and I know that God is with me, protecting me as I journey forward in faith.
Loving God, We love you! You bless us with your presence. Even when I feel lost, I can always look to the mountains and confirm that you are with me. In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Even when I lose sight of God, God is still present.
Look to the hills and praise God! Pastor Liz
