Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

September 30, 2023

2 Corinthians 1:3-7

3 May the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ be blessed! He is the compassionate Father and God of all comfort. 4 He’s the one who comforts us in all our trouble so that we can comfort other people who are in every kind of trouble. We offer the same comfort that we ourselves received from God. 5 That is because we receive so much comfort through Christ in the same way that we share so many of Christ’s sufferings. 6 So if we have trouble, it is to bring you comfort and salvation. If we are comforted, it is to bring you comfort from the experience of endurance while you go through the same sufferings that we also suffer. 7 Our hope for you is certain because we know that as you are partners in suffering, so also you are partners in comfort.

Good Morning. Oh, the Lord’s been good to me! Thanks be to God!

During our lives, we suffer. We suffer as we experience loss: lost health, youth, items, opportunities, and loved ones. It is comforting to find partners in our suffering. It is often helpful to join a support group and share stories with those who have experienced similar loss. We can find comfort in sharing because we take what we hold in our hearts and release it as we say the words.

This is not easy. It seems we can hold onto a time of denial if we don’t voice the words. If we don’t say it, maybe it’s a dream or simply a misunderstanding. When we utter the words, we admit it to be a reality. As hard as this is, it is necessary so that we may begin to move from our inward grief to shared mourning with others who care for us. We must learn to live a new normal existence.

Just as Christ suffers with us in these times, Christ is here to bring comfort. He has lived and is continuing to live through what we are experiencing. Through Christ, we can endure those things that seem impossible. When we can’t take another step, Christ lifts us up and carries us until we can once again take the next step forward. Through our own sharing, we are blessed as we comfort one another. Our words of mourning might help someone who is struggling with their own grief. When we received the Holy Spirit, we received God’s power and strength to continue our faith journey despite our struggles. Our present-day sufferings are nothing in comparison with the glory that awaits us.

Healing God, We love you! Thank you for sharing our lives. Some days are so hard! Open our eyes so that we may see Your glory every day. In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: God can turn my service into a miracle for others.

We are never alone! Pastor Liz
