Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room

Read John 4:9-14
9 The Samaritan woman asked, “Why do you, a Jewish man, ask for something to drink from me, a Samaritan woman?” (Jews and Samaritans didn’t associate with each other.) 10 Jesus responded, “If you recognized God’s gift and who is saying to you, ‘Give me some water to drink,’ you would be asking him and he would give you living water.” 11 The woman said to him, “Sir, you don’t have a bucket and the well is deep. Where would you get this living water? 12 You aren’t greater than our father Jacob, are you? He gave this well to us, and he drank from it himself, as did his sons and his livestock.” 13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks from the water that I will give will never be thirsty again. The water that I give will become in those who drink it a spring of water that bubbles up into eternal life.”
Good Morning! Whoever drinks from the water that Jesus gives will never be thirsty again!
I’ve got peace like a river, I’ve got love like an ocean, and I’ve got joy like a founain in my soul. When we accept God into our hearts, all of our needs will be fulfilled. I have always loved to watch fountains of water. The bubbling, gurgling, and spraying of water is mesmerizing. Some fountains have a singular spray that is steady, never changing. Other fountains have a very defined pattern that is amazing to follow. While some fountains seem to be much more random in their design. With short spikes, tall spikes, and just when you think you know which part will spray next, it seems to be somewhere else. These days we have fountains in play parks where you can stand among the fountains. It is very joyous to watch children and adults at play in the fountains with their squeals of delight.
It seems that our lives move in and out of patterns like the fountains that I just described. As children on our faith journey, we begin with our fountain creating a steady stream of water in a singular pattern while we listen and learn of our Savior. As we begin to grow in our faith, these singular patterns begin to slowly grow into more complex patterns. At first, we may have one or two divergent patterns, but over time as our faith blossoms the patterns become more intricate, discernable so that all can see Jesus through your thoughts, words, and actions.
What about those fountains that seem to be random in their design? At times, we must make unexpected twists and turns on our faith journey as we are called by God. Sometimes we choose to stray from the path altogether and encounter obstacles along our journey. Either of these situations may alter our fountains into patterns so random that they are difficult to see.
Times of change whether directed by God or as a result of our free will can be turbulent with highs and lows as exhibited by the tall and short spikes that seem to rise up most unexpectedly. As much as we often resist the changes that cause the chaotic rhythms of the random fountains, if we can let go and let God be in control we can feel exhilarated and great peace all in the same moment. We will never thirst again. Our God is Amazing and will provide for us.
Loving God, Thank You for loving us. May we embrace your love and accept the changes that are part of your plan in our lives. Help to let go and let the Holy Spirit work within us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: “My soul thirsts for God, for the living God” (Ps. 42:2, NIV).
I’ve got joy like a fountain in my soul! Pastor Liz
