Morning Devotional 101224 Fishes and Loaves

Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

  October 12, 2024

Luke 9:10-17

10 When the apostles returned, they described for Jesus what they had done. Taking them with him, Jesus withdrew privately to a city called Bethsaida. 11 When the crowds figured it out, they followed him. He welcomed them, spoke to them about God’s kingdom, and healed those who were sick. 12 When the day was almost over, the Twelve came to him and said, “Send the crowd away so that they can go to the nearby villages and countryside and find lodging and food, because we are in a deserted place.” 13 He replied, “You give them something to eat.” But they said, “We have no more than five loaves of bread and two fish—unless we go and buy food for all these people.” 14 (They said this because about five thousand men were present.) Jesus said to his disciples, “Seat them in groups of about fifty.” 15 They did so, and everyone was seated. 16 He took the five loaves and the two fish, looked up to heaven, blessed them, and broke them and gave them to the disciples to set before the crowd. 17 Everyone ate until they were full, and the disciples filled twelve baskets with the leftovers.

Good Morning! The Lord provides for us!

Over the years, those in charge of every church dinner have worried if there will be enough food. Sometimes, they even decide upon backup plans just in case there isn’t enough. We always have enough, whether the meal is a planned menu or a potluck. I remember a few times when we had all side dishes or desserts, but no one walked away hungry.

Fishes and Loaves! When these planners voiced those concerns to Lowell, he would say, “Fishes and Loaves!” God promises to provide for our needs! Sometimes, we confuse our wants with our needs. Remember the Israelites wandering in the desert? God gave them manna and quail each day!

No one needed food, but they grumbled because they wanted other things, different things, and more things. Like little children, they whined, “But God, we had manna and quail yesterday! When we were slaves, we had a variety of bread given to us each day!”

Think about it! Did they really prefer to be slaves of the Pharoah? To what are we enslaved? Would we also be whining even when all of our needs are met? It is easy to be consumed with the desire always to have more than you currently have.

2 Corinthians 9:8

"And God will generously provide all you need. Then, you will always have everything you need and plenty left over to share with others.”

Dear Lord, We are your children! We worry and grumble about many things. Help us use that energy to share your love with others. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: With God, there is always enough!

God provides! Pastor Liz
