Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
October 16, 2025
Ruth 2:8-12
8 Boaz said to Ruth, “Haven’t you understood, my daughter? Don’t go glean in another field; don’t go anywhere else. Instead, stay here with my young women. 9 Keep your eyes on the field that they are harvesting and go along after them. I’ve ordered the young men not to assault you. Whenever you are thirsty, go to the jugs and drink from what the young men have filled.” 10 Then she bowed down, face to the ground, and replied to him, “How is it that I’ve found favor in your eyes, that you notice me? I’m an immigrant.” 11 Boaz responded to her, “Everything that you did for your mother-in-law after your husband’s death has been reported fully to me: how you left behind your father, your mother, and the land of your birth, and came to a people you hadn’t known beforehand. 12 May the LORD reward you for your deed. May you receive a rich reward from the LORD, the God of Israel, under whose wings you’ve come to seek refuge.”
Good Morning! God is our refuge!
Our kindness is seen by others. In staying with Naomi, Ruth did what she saw as the right thing to do. She set aside her own needs to take care of her mother-in-law. Naomi had lost her husband and both sons, and in a patriarchal society, she was left with nothing.
When Ruth left her homeland to follow Naomi, she could have suffered alongside her, but instead, she sought ways to ensure their survival. Ruth was strong and trusted in the kindness of others to provide for Naomi and herself. As an immigrant in Bethlehem, Ruth could have been attacked or left to go hungry, but Boaz interceded on her behalf.
By God’s grace, Naomi met Boaz, who saw Ruth as a person worthy of his help. Boaz, a wealthy landowner, shared his abundance with Ruth, rewarding her kindness and self-sacrifice in staying with Naomi.
God calls us to serve one another and to share abundantly our blessings with our neighbors. Boaz showed kindness and served as Ruth’s guardian and redeemer. Jesus is our guardian and redeemer, and he will provide for our needs as we work to love our neighbors as ourselves.
Loving Lord, you bless us abundantly! Boaz teaches us how we can provide for others. May we always share our blessings with others. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: The Holy Spirit sustains us in our challenging times.
Ruth’s kindness was seen, and she received God’s blessings. Pastor Liz
