Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
October 26, 2024
Jeremiah 18:1-6
1 Jeremiah received the LORD’s word: 2 Go down to the potter’s house, and I’ll give you instructions about what to do there. 3 So I went down to the potter’s house; he was working on the potter’s wheel. 4 But the piece he was making was flawed while still in his hands, so the potter started on another, as seemed best to him. 5 Then the LORD’s word came to me: 6 House of Israel, can’t I deal with you like this potter, declares the LORD? Like clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in mine, house of Israel!
Good Morning! God is the potter! We are the clay!
My one experience as a “potter” ( a term I use very loosely) was frustrating. It was very messy, and I could not create the shape I wanted. Each attempt started well, but as the pot spun, one side was not symmetrical or collapsed altogether.
I had a favorite breakfast bowl that was colorful and the perfect size for my morning oatmeal. Over time and lots of use, the bowl's rim chipped. However, the bowl remained functional for a long time, and I frequently used it because the bright colors lifted my spirits. One morning, I put the bowl with the water and oats into the microwave and heard a funny sound. The bowl cracked from the chip to the other side, and the liquid seeped through the crack.
Thankfully, God has infinite patience. How many of God’s pots, us, become chipped, cracked, broken, misshapen, or even collapsed? Yet, through the Holy Spirit, God's patience is a constant reassurance, molding and reshaping us throughout our lives so that we may continue to serve others as we are called.
Dear Lord, We are your children! Thank you for not tossing us in the trash when we become chipped, faded, or broken. Remold us! Make us! Use us! Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God can use us despite our imperfections.
Thanks be to God! Pastor Liz
