Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
October 30, 2023
Psalm 32:8-11
8 I will instruct you and teach you about the direction you should go. I’ll advise you and keep my eye on you. 9 Don’t be like some senseless horse or mule, whose movement must be controlled with a bit and a bridle. Don’t be anything like that! 10 The pain of the wicked is severe, but faithful love surrounds the one who trusts the LORD. 11 You who are righteous, rejoice in the LORD and be glad! All you whose hearts are right, sing out in joy!
Good Morning. All whose hearts are right, sing out in joy!
I must admit to some innate stubbornness that has caused me to act like a senseless horse or mule at times. I do admit there is a fine line between stubbornness and persistence. Persistence is when we work through to the end despite our challenges. In contrast, stubbornness clouds our ability to see that there is no rational end for which to strive. We stick to our plan because we refuse to admit our error.
God blesses and curses us with free will. We have the ability to make choices, good and bad. In return, we must accept the consequences that accompany our choices, good and bad. Too often, we want the glory of success, but we don’t want the agony of defeat. God does not create our struggles but is by our side to lead us when we admit that we need help.
Of course, we sometimes don’t like God’s instruction, so we go in our own direction. By God’s grace, God is there waiting to help us pick up the pieces of our broken dreams. God’s faithful love is waiting to enfold us when we are ready.
Creator God, We love you! You made us in your image and gave us everything that we need, but sometimes, we want more. We want the shiny things in the evil camp, so we join them just for a minute. Thank you for waiting for us to return when we see that just because something glitters does not mean it’s gold. In the name of Christ, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Let God be your guide every day.
God’s hand is waiting for us to reach out! Pastor Liz
