Exodus 13:17-22

17 When Pharaoh let the people go, God didn’t lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, even though that was the shorter route. God thought, If the people have to fight and face war, they will run back to Egypt. 18 So God led the people by the roundabout way of the Reed Sea desert. The Israelites went up out of the land of Egypt ready for battle. 19 Moses took with him Joseph’s bones just as Joseph had made Israel’s sons promise when he said to them, “When God takes care of you, you must carry my bones out of here with you.” 20 They set out from Succoth and camped at Etham on the edge of the desert. 21 The LORD went in front of them during the day in a column of cloud to guide them and at night in a column of lightning to give them light. This way they could travel during the day and at night. 22 The column of cloud during the day and the column of lightning at night never left its place in front of the people.

Good Morning! Jesus said, “I am the light of the world!”

In Exodus 3:14, Moses asks God his name to convince the Israelites to follow him. And God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, “I AM has sent me to you.”

John included the seven “I am” statements of Jesus in his Gospel.

  • I am the bread of life.

  • I am the light of the world.

  • I am the door of the sheep.

  • I am the good shepherd.

  • I am the resurrection and the life.

  • I am the way, the truth, and the life.

  • I am the true vine.

Jesus is a type of Moses because He came to deliver people from their sins and spiritual captivity. John demonstrated that the “I AM” in Exodus was now physically standing in front of people, ready to be their Shepherd, their Door to the Father, their Life, their Vine, their Light, their Bread of Life, and their Truth.

He’s the “I AM”—the God of the NOW—ready to be whatever we need Him to be in our lives. Just as God led the Israelites through the desert with columns of cloud and light, Jesus came to lead us along our faith journey. In the “I AM” statements, Jesus proclaims he is with us to conquer all earthly challenges, even death.

When we are weary, Jesus takes our burdens. When we are weak, Jesus stands with us. When we are lost, Jesus leaves the many to come and find us, the one. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord, and blessed are those who come to Jesus.

Dear Lord, We are your children! You sent your son to lead us so we can find our way home. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: God’s guiding signs are everywhere.
