Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
November 4, 2024
Psalm 121:!-8
1 I raise my eyes toward the mountains. Where will my help come from? 2 My help comes from the LORD, the maker of heaven and earth. 3 God won’t let your foot slip. Your protector won’t fall asleep on the job. 4 No! Israel’s protector never sleeps or rests! 5 The LORD is your protector; the LORD is your shade right beside you. 6 The sun won’t strike you during the day; neither will the moon at night. 7 The LORD will protect you from all evil; God will protect your very life. 8 The LORD will protect you on your journeys whether going or coming from now until forever from now.
Good Morning! Great is the Lord!
When I was in the second grade, my family moved to the flatland of Indiana, where corn and soybean fields extended further than the eye could see. I could look out and see the horizon miles away. When I go home to visit family, I feel an unquestionable comfort in seeing the openness of the landscape and those endless fields.
My parents grew up in Eastern Kentucky, and my dad loved and missed the mountains. I remember when we would travel to visit my grandparents, and Dad would sigh when he caught the first glimpse of the mountains on our trip “home.”
When we traveled, I was fascinated by seeing the mountains along the way, but my love affair with the mountains didn’t really begin until 2014, when we moved to Afton. The mountains represent God’s grandeur in many ways. Within a single view are trees, rock faces, and moving water.
The mountains provide a way to elevate ourselves toward God. When the sky is clear, I see and feel God’s expansive power. I feel covered in God’s love and protection when the clouds move in.
What a blessing to live nestled within the foothills and valleys of the Blue Ridge Mountains, where we can imagine “almost” heaven.
Dear Lord, We are your children! Your power is evident all around us. You formed the mountains and valleys, created the plants and animals, and blessed us with the eyes and ears to see them. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: When we look upwards, we are reminded that God is with us!
Lift your eyes and see the face of God! Pastor Liz
