Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room
November 5, 2021
Read Matthew 5:38-42
38 “You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. 39 But I say to you that you must not oppose those who want to hurt you. If people slap you on your right cheek, you must turn the left cheek to them as well. 40 When they wish to haul you to court and take your shirt, let them have your coat too. 41 When they force you to go one mile, go with them two. 42 Give to those who ask, and don’t refuse those who wish to borrow from you.
Good Morning! Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
This is a challenging passage. We live in a time where almost every street corner has someone asking for help, and others thrive upon scamming or cheating people out of large sums of money. We read the stories about those who make more money this way than by working a typical job. We also know that some would simply use the money to buy drugs or alcohol. What should we do? Can you honestly support them all?
We are taught to not judge others, so how do we respond appropriately to those in need. My approach was learned from watching others who always seemed to know how to help. When someone asks for money for gas, follow them to the gas station and fill their tank with gas. If they are hungry, feed them. If they are cold, clothe them. Listen to your heart and let God lead you.
Finally, offer to pray with anyone you are called to help, and then continue praying that these lost children of God will find their way. Are you going to be “scammed” by someone who isn’t really in need? Most likely you will, but let your heart lead you and both those who receive and those who give will be blessed.
Loving God, Thank You for loving us. May we listen and see the world through the lens of our heart. Help us to offer love and mercy to a world in great need. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Even one generous act can inspire change in our world.
How can you make a difference in the life of one lost soul? Pastor Liz
