Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
November 9, 2025
Mark 8:34-37
34 After calling the crowd together with his disciples, Jesus said to them, “All who want to come after me must say no to themselves, take up their cross, and follow me. 35 All who want to save their lives will lose them. But all who lose their lives because of me and because of the good news will save them. 36 Why would people gain the whole world but lose their lives? 37 What will people give in exchange for their lives?
Good Morning! Happy are those who follow God!
I have collected many things over the years. Maybe that’s a nice way to say, “I am a hoarder.” My collections are eclectic in theme and span a variety of interests. Some collections date back to my youth, while others are more recent.
One challenge is deciding to part with things when they are no longer needed. For example, shoes that I’m unlikely to wear again sit in tubs in my closet. Then there are those collection pieces that have value simply because they are part of the group.
Why is it so hard to let go of things? In verse 34, Jesus said, “We must say no to themselves.” 36 Why would people gain the whole world but lose their lives? 37 What will people give in exchange for their lives?
Could we give away all that you have in exchange for our lives, or the lives of others? Jesus came and lived among us, and when the time came, he gave his life so that we all might have eternal life.
Maybe I should start with one of those shoe bins and practice giving away some stuff!
Loving Lord, you bless us abundantly! We can become distracted and consumed by our earthly treasures. Help us focus on your love! Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: When we clear out the clutter, we have more space for Jesus!
Pick up your cross and follow Jesus! Pastor Liz
