Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
November 18, 2025
Mark 10:36-42
46 Jesus and his followers came into Jericho. As Jesus was leaving Jericho, together with his disciples and a sizable crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, Timaeus’ son, was sitting beside the road. 47 When he heard that Jesus of Nazareth was there, he began to shout, “Jesus, Son of David, show me mercy!” 48 Many scolded him, telling him to be quiet, but he shouted even louder, “Son of David, show me mercy!” 49 Jesus stopped and said, “Call him forward.” They called the blind man, “Be encouraged! Get up! He’s calling you.” 50 Throwing his coat to the side, he jumped up and came to Jesus. 51 Jesus asked him, “What do you want me to do for you?” The blind man said, “Teacher, I want to see.” 52 Jesus said, “Go, your faith has healed you.” At once he was able to see, and he began to follow Jesus on the way.
Good Morning! Jesus loves everyone!
Don’t be afraid to ask! We do not know how long Bartimaeus had been blind or how long he had been sitting beside the road. What we do know is that he had heard of Jesus. We also know that he believed that Jesus could heal him.
It seems that Barimaeus would have known that he was viewed as an eyesore or an inconvenience to the proper people of Jericho. After all, being blind implied that he had committed some sin in his past.
Despite all that, when he heard that Jesus was near, he called out to him for mercy. Many told him to be quiet, but instead he got louder. This reminds me of another time when Jesus’ followers were told to be quiet, and Jesus said that if they became quiet, even the stones would cry out.
Bartimaeus showed great faith in calling out to someone he had never seen and asking for mercy. His faith was the impetus of his healing. We, who have not seen Jesus with our own eyes, are asked to believe and be healed.
Lord, you bless us abundantly! Give us the faith of Bartimaeus, so that we may see through our blindness. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Even when we are blind, Jesus will lead us home.
Believe and be healed! Pastor Liz
