Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
November 21, 2025
1 Kings 19:11-13
11 The LORD said, “Go out and stand at the mountain before the LORD. The LORD is passing by.” A very strong wind tore through the mountains and broke apart the stones before the LORD. But the LORD wasn’t in the wind. After the wind, there was an earthquake. But the LORD wasn’t in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake, there was a fire. But the LORD wasn’t in the fire. After the fire, there was a sound. Thin. Quiet. 13 When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his coat. He went out and stood at the cave’s entrance. A voice came to him and said, “Why are you here, Elijah?”
Good Morning! Surely the presence of the Lord is in this place!
Do you ever get goosebumps? I get goosebumps when things suddenly align in a mysterious (God’s) way. Within the chaos of what we call life, there are many seemingly random things swirling in and around us. Sometimes I call these things the loose squirrels running around in my brain.
You get glimpses of the big picture along the way, but then some pieces haven’t arrived yet, so it seems as if you’re going in circles. Then, out of the blue, the missing pieces arrive; everything makes sense and clicks into place.
When I can’t explain an occurrence with science or logic, I call these happenings God’s mysterious ways. The cool thing is they are happening all around us, all the time, but until it is time for the mystery to be revealed to us, they continue spinning in the chaos.
My sermon preparation each week begins with reading scripture and opening myself to discern how God wishes for me to share the word. Sometimes this process is quick, but other times the thoughts stew, waiting for the missing pieces to be revealed.
I won’t reveal the mystery before its time, but suffice it to say that my missing pieces have arrived, and the story elements are beginning to click into place.
Lord, you bless us abundantly! Thank you for allowing us to be part of the greatest story ever told. Thank you. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: God’s presence is all around us!
God reveals the answers in God’s time! Pastor Liz
