Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

November 30, 2023

Luke 12:22-26

22 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Therefore, I say to you, don’t worry about your life, what you will eat, or about your body, what you will wear. 23 There is more to life than food and more to the body than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: they neither plant nor harvest, they have no silo or barn, yet God feeds them. You are worth so much more than birds! 25 Who among you, by worrying, can add a single moment to your life? 26 If you can’t do such a small thing, why worry about the rest?

Good Morning. Make a joyful noise unto the Lord!

This passage denounces worrying and takes us back to our longing for the peace of Christ. On the day of our birth, we are free spirits who rely upon others to meet all of our needs. As I sit and think back to my childhood, I cannot pinpoint when I began to have worries, but it seems to stem from my desire to take charge or control something.

Even as young children who are still dependent on our adults for our meals, we start to flex our need for power by refusing to eat certain foods. This innate desire to have power over things is the root of our anxiety and worry. We naturally hone this trait over the rest of our lives, and we become adept worriers. Sadly, this worrying is the cause of restless nights, gastric anxiety, and the use of medicines to control such things.

Think of a time when you were consumed by worrying about some upcoming event. Perhaps the mere memory begins to rechurn in your stomach. Let’s skip ahead to a better memory. Think of how you felt when the worry dissipated. Do you remember the euphoria that wooshed in? When the space within your heart, soul, and mind that worry consumed is free, peace rushes in to fill the space.

Hmmm, so are we saying that all we have to do is let go of worrying to find the peace of Christ? Well, that seems like a no-brainer! Ahh! If it were only that easy. Remember that innate desire for power. To eliminate the worrying, we must let go and let God be in control.

Therein lies the problem. We struggle with letting go, yet 25 Who among you, by worrying, can add a single moment to your life? 26 If you can’t do such a small thing, why worry about the rest?

Gracious God, Thank you for this beautiful gift of life. We struggle to see the forest for the trees. We can be so stubborn. Thank you for loving us anyway. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: God will provide for those who humble themselves.
