Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
November 30, 2025
Luke 14:18-22
18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me. He has sent me to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to liberate the oppressed, 19 and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor. 20 He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the synagogue assistant, and sat down. Every eye in the synagogue was fixed on him. 21 He began to explain to them, “Today, this scripture has been fulfilled just as you heard it.” 22 Everyone was raving about Jesus, so impressed were they by the gracious words flowing from his lips. They said, “This is Joseph’s son, isn’t it?”
Good Morning! Advent is upon us!
Jesus read these words of the Prophet Isaiah, “18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me. He has sent me to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the prisoners and recovery of sight to the blind, to liberate the oppressed, 19 and to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.
How would we react if someone among us read this passage? We would think that the reader was reading the Scripture as we do each week. Even if the liturgist began to explain the text as Jesus did, would we understand or believe what we were hearing, or would we simply think about what an excellent reader the person was?
For this brief moment, Jesus mesmerized the crowd, and then in the passage that followed these verses, they remembered that Jesus was just the carpenter’s son, and the moment was gone. Advent is a time to focus on the signs that allow us to prepare for the coming of God’s Son, Emmanuel.
Lord, you bless us abundantly! We pray that you will help us see the glory revealed in this season of Advent. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Prepare your heart for the arrival of Jesus!
Are we ready to see Jesus? Pastor Liz
