Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room
January 18, 2022
Read Psalm 111:1-10
1 Praise the LORD! I thank the LORD with all my heart in the company of those who do right, in the congregation. 2 The works of the LORD are magnificent; they are treasured by all who desire them. 3 God’s deeds are majestic and glorious. God’s righteousness stands forever. 4 God is famous for his wondrous works. The LORD is full of mercy and compassion. 5 God gives food to those who honor him. God remembers his covenant forever. 6 God proclaimed his powerful deeds to his people and gave them what had belonged to other nations. 7 God’s handiwork is honesty and justice; all God’s rules are trustworthy 8 they are established always and forever: they are fulfilled with truth and right doing. 9 God sent redemption for his people; God commanded that his covenant last forever. Holy and awesome is God’s name! 10 Fear of the LORD is where wisdom begins; sure knowledge is for all who keep God’s laws. God’s praise lasts forever!
Good Morning! Rejoice! Rejoice! Again I say rejoice!
Throughout the Old Testament, we see evidence of God’s covenant to care and provide for all who call him Lord. A covenant is an agreement between two parties to work together toward a common goal. We begin with Noah and all living creatures with whom God promises to never destroy them despite the evil working among them. Next, we move to Abraham. God promises to make him the father of many who will inherit the land in Canaan and receive a universal blessing for all humanity through his family.
As we move forward, we must remember God’s covenant with Moses through whom God will deliver Israel from slavery, make them a great nation, and bring them to the promised land. This brings us to David who is anointed king over Israel fulfilling the promises made to Abraham and Israel. Of course, all of these covenants are the foundation upon which the covenant will culminate when Jesus, a descendant of David, will fulfill the prophecies and bring blessing upon all peoples.
This is the Good News: the New Covenant! Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus, we are redeemed. Jesus is the light of the world and is our conduit to secure our relationship with God. Through Christ, we are forgiven by God’s grace and promised eternal life when we claim Jesus as our Lord and Savior. We no longer are resigned to walking in sin and darkness, Jesus brings freedom and light. We are granted the promise that peace and righteousness will reign forever through Christ who fulfills the covenant.
9God sent redemption for his people; God commanded that his covenant last forever.
Creator God, Thank You for loving us. God, you made us in Your image and promise to care for us forever. Through Your Son, Jesus, we have been saved. Thank you. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Even when I’m unsure of God’s calling, I will trust and obey.
I bring you Good News! Pastor Liz
