Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
December 10, 2025
Mark 4:23-29
23 Jesus said to him, “‘If you can do anything’? All things are possible for the one who has faith.” 24 At that the boy’s father cried out, “I have faith; help my lack of faith!” 25 Noticing that the crowd had surged together, Jesus spoke harshly to the unclean spirit, “Mute and deaf spirit, I command you to come out of him and never enter him again.” 26 After screaming and shaking the boy horribly, the spirit came out. The boy seemed to be dead; in fact, several people said that he had died. 27 But Jesus took his hand, lifted him up, and he arose. 28 After Jesus went into a house, his disciples asked him privately, “Why couldn’t we throw this spirit out?” 29 Jesus answered, “Throwing this kind of spirit out requires prayer.”
Good Morning! All things are possible for the one who has faith!
“I have faith; help my lack of faith!”
What a powerful confession! I feel we all share these sentiments of the father. I proclaim my faith, as do many of you, but do we admit our doubts and lack of faith?
When I sense my brokenness, my lack of full trust and faith, I experience inner turmoil that I could classify as my desire to unify my heart, soul, and mind as a spiritual “fit.” In those moments, I cry out to Jesus, throw out the evil spirit that has taken up residence within me.
I often identify with Peter, who frequently, stands up and proclaims his faith in his words and actions, but his human frailty tempers his desire to fully believe. Peter stepped out of the boat full of faith, then his doubts distracted his mind, and he began to sink. Peter’s intentions and motivations were pure, but the evil spirit slipped in when he was most vulnerable.
When Peter denied Jesus three times on the night preceding his crucifixion, it wasn’t Peter’s faith at work; it was that evil spirit. The moment of truth, choosing to proclaim Christ or face possible death, caused his self-preservation response to override his faith.
In John 15:13, we read Jesus’ words: "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." Jesus spoke these words to His disciples, demonstrating the ultimate self-sacrificial love He would show by dying on the cross for humanity.
“I have faith; help my lack of faith!”
Lord, you bless us abundantly! Help us, O Lord! We are weak, and our faith is shaky when we need it the most. Cast out the evil spirit that lies within us. We love you, Lord! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Jesus believes in us even when our faith wavers.
Faith conquers the impossibilities of the world! Pastor Liz
