Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room
December 14, 2021
Read Romans 8:35-39
35 Who will separate us from Christ’s love? Will we be separated by trouble, or distress, or harassment, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? 36 As it is written, We are being put to death all day long for your sake. We are treated like sheep for the slaughter. 37 But in all these things we win a sweeping victory through the one who loved us. 38 I’m convinced that nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ Jesus our Lord: not death or life, not angels or rulers, not present things or future things, not powers 39 or height or depth, or any other thing that is created.
Good Morning! Nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ Jesus our Lord!
On this clear, cold morning, I somewhat begrudgingly took Neon outside. As we walked around the neighborhood together, I experienced two blessings. Many of you know that Lowell loved owls. In fact, he adopted Wise Owl and then Padre Owl as his screen name. Yesterday morning, I heard an owl hooting in the neighborhood and I immediately felt love and a connection with Lowell, my forever love.
This morning the owl was back talking to me. Neon and I wandered on our path and I was looking up towards the sky in search of the owl, and suddenly my eyes brightened as I saw a “shooting star”! I am often ready to go out and look for meteors streaking across the sky, but the Geminid Meteor Shower had slipped under my very busy radar. I then began to look towards the Gemini constellation in earnest. I was blessed by not one, but 5 meteors in about a ten-minute period. As I viewed the sky, my heart sang with joy.
Back to our theme for this Advent season, pay attention. Look for joy in everything we do. It’s time to focus and open ourselves to the possibilities of what might be and what can be. All we have to do is believe, as Paul writes in his letter to the Romans: I’m convinced that nothing can separate us from God’s love in Christ Jesus our Lord.
God, our creator, makes everything special. We must simply believe and look to the light of Christ as we navigate even the darkest times in our lives. Sometimes in the darkness, we receive great blessings as we are invited to glimpse our future glory
Creator God, Thank You for loving us. You love us and protect us, yet we often feel like we are alone. May we turn our focus towards you and pay attention to our many blessings. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Even in my darkest hour, God will never abandon me.
Focus on the Light! Pastor Liz
