Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
December 23, 2023
Matthew 5:14-16
14 You are the light of the world. A city on top of a hill can’t be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket. Instead, they put it on top of a lampstand, and it shines on all who are in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before people so they can see the good things you do and praise your Father who is in heaven.
Good Morning. Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel! Shall come to thee, O Israel!
Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” Jesus said, “You [we] are the light of the world.”
In the darkness, many things are hidden, and we are fearful. I remember those moments of fear when I would wake up in an unknown space in the dark. Your brain scrambles, trying to make sense of things. Where am I? Where is the light switch? Where is the bathroom?
In the light, we can see the things that surround us. Sometimes, we fear too much light because it is hard to hide our failures and shortcomings in the light. We forget that God sees us for who we are, even when we are lingering in the shadows.
Light gives us hope! Light gives hope to those who are lost in the darkness. Jesus is our light, and we are called to be the light so others can find their way to Jesus.
So . . . Rise, and Shine, and give God the glory!
Gracious God, Thank you for this beautiful gift of life. We are scared of being in the dark, yet we also fear what others will see when we are in the light. Thank you for seeking and loving us as we are. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: As a follower of Christ, I can be a light to the world.
Rise and Shine so that all will know! Pastor Liz
