Morning Devotional 123023 We Are the Village

Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

December 30, 2023

1 Corinthians 3:5-9

5 After all, what is Apollos? What is Paul? They are servants who helped you to believe. Each one had a role given to them by the Lord: 6 I planted, Apollos watered, but God made it grow. 7 Because of this, neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but the only one who is anything is God who makes it grow. 8 The one who plants and the one who waters work together, but each one will receive their own reward for their own labor. 9 We are God’s coworkers, and you are God’s field, God’s building.

Good Morning! It takes a village!

Over the years, I have known many farmers and discovered that they have a unique perspective on how things work. They realize that they are part of an intricate web providing food for the masses. Whatever crop they plant, grow, and harvest, they do their part.

Let’s look at going to the store to buy a loaf of bread. If we start with farmers, they prepare the soil for planting, plant the seeds, and allow God to make it grow. At the appropriate time, they harvest the crop. Next, they deliver their wheat to a facility where the process begins. The wheat is ground and turned into flour. The flour is mixed into the dough. The loaf is shaped, the bread is baked, and voila, we have loaves of bread on the grocery store's shelves.

But wait a minute . . . Where did the other ingredients come from? How did the truck drivers get the gas to make deliveries? The questions are endless. Farmers know they are one piece of a very big puzzle.

We are called to play our part in the gathering and nurturing of souls. One of us plants the seeds of faith while another nurtures those young seedlings. Only the grace of God can allow them to mature and grow into Christians who are ready to play their part in this neverending process.

Gracious God, Thank you for this beautiful gift of life. Sometimes, we think we are insignificant to your plan and forget that we are all important. Whether we are the sower of seeds or the one who harvests the fruit, our work is necessary. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: God can use my efforts to spread the gospel.

On this sixth day of Christmas, I remember that all are required to finish the task! Pastor Liz
