Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
December 30, 2024
Matthew 8:23-27
23 When Jesus got into a boat, his disciples followed him. 24 A huge storm arose on the lake so that waves were sloshing over the boat. But Jesus was asleep. 25 They came and woke him, saying, “Lord, rescue us! We’re going to drown!” 26 He said to them, “Why are you afraid, you people of weak faith?” Then he got up and gave orders to the winds and the lake, and there was a great calm. 27 The people were amazed and said, “What kind of person is this? Even the winds and the lake obey him!”
Good Morning. Jesus will calm the storms of our lives!
A few years ago, I fell and hurt (later, I found out they were broken) two fingers. As a pianist, this caused me concern, but I didn’t feel panicky. When I was sitting in the Emergency Room, the attendant remarked to me, “You are very calm!” I responded in a “crazy” voice, “WOULD YOU RATHER I BE UPSET?” “No,” he said, “Calm is good.”
I have noticed that in moments of significant adversity, I am not one to panic. I am enveloped in calmness. Now, afterward, I am likely to break down and cry, but at the necessary moment, I have great clarity of thought.
I know God is by my side, leading me through my challenges. I believe that this calmness comes through my relationship with God. I certainly have the human tendency to fear danger and the unknown, but when I feel God’s presence within me, peace fills my soul. Everyone who calls Christ their Lord and Savior has this peace available. Submit your fears and let go of your troubles; you will find God’s peace.
Loving Lord, We are your children! When we feel lost, you are with us. When we are scared, you are there. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: When we face trials, trust the Lord.
Fear not! God is with us! Pastor Liz
