Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
January 12, 2026
Philippians 4:10-13
10 I was very glad in the Lord because now at last you have shown concern for me again. (Of course you were always concerned but had no way to show it.) 11 I’m not saying this because I need anything, for I have learned how to be content in any circumstance. 12 I know the experience of being in need and of having more than enough; I have learned the secret to being content in any and every circumstance, whether full or hungry or whether having plenty or being poor. 13 I can endure all these things through the power of the one who gives me strength.
Good Morning! Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
I feel God peering into my soul as the sun begins to pierce the morning sky. Paul sets a high bar for our aspirational goals. Can we be content in any and every circumstance?
This requires much from us. Most importantly, it requires that we let go of control. I feel as if I walk a tight rope balanced between taking charge and letting go. God has placed a plan in my heart that calls me to release the finalization of the big picture while asking me to step out and be the light of Christ to the world.
I have times when I feel that I lack the ability to complete the mundane tasks of everyday life, so how does God expect for me or anyone to show and teach others a new way of living? As I learn to let go of the things over which I have no control, I learn to engage the strength of the Holy Spirit working within me.
Instead of getting lost in the messiness of human constraints, I am working to focus on the “why” of my actions. I serve others in love because God first loved me. God loves all without exception. Not just me, but even me.
With the renewed confidence of a child of God, I can endure all things through Christ who strengthens me. Amen!
Redeeming Lord, you bless us abundantly! You ask much of us, your flawed children. Thank you for sending Jesus to show us your way. Thank you. We love you. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.
Thought for the day: To be content with life is a great gift.
