Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

  January 16, 2025

Psalm 57:1-4

1 Have mercy on me, God; have mercy on me because I have taken refuge in you. I take refuge in the shadow of your wings until destruction passes by. 2 I call out to God Most High to God, who comes through for me. 3 He sends orders from heaven and saves me, rebukes the one who tramples me. Selah God sends his loyal love and faithfulness. 4 My life is in the middle of a pack of lions. I lie down among those who devour humans. Their teeth are spears and arrows; their tongues are sharpened swords.

Good Morning. Fear not, God is with us!

God called me to be a pastor, and I responded, “Yes, Lord!” I knew there would be challenges, but I told myself that if God put me in that situation, God would lead me. One of the most significant discoveries on my journey is the need to recognize my own weaknesses as God leads me to guide others.

Prior to my calling, I had lived a blessed life and faced my share of challenges. Most recently, I endured my mom’s struggles as her dementia took over her mind and Lowell’s battles with Cancer.

In the moment of each challenge, you muddle through to the best of your ability. You adopt a one-day-at-a-time approach because the situation is too overwhelming to manage otherwise. Finally, relief comes and you resume your “normal” life.

Whenever you look back and review an event, you find things you did well and discern regret for those things you wish you had done better. This is how we grow and learn. Of course, these reflections are generated from our earthly, human perspective.

As God’s children, God is with us and asks us to give over our worries and concerns. In listening and praying with those in need, I find God providing me with insight and words to bring peace and comfort in the midst of our fear and grief.

Loving Lord, Maker of all things! We get scared and sometimes forget to call out for help. Thank you for being there when we are ready to admit our needs. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: God’s blessings can come from difficult circumstances.
