Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room

January 24, 2022

Read Ephesians 2:14-22

14 Christ is our peace. He made both Jews and Gentiles into one group. With his body, he broke down the barrier of hatred that divided us. 15 He canceled the detailed rules of the Law so that he could create one new person out of the two groups, making peace. 16 He reconciled them both as one body to God by the cross, which ended the hostility to God. 17 When he came, he announced the good news of peace to you who were far away from God and to those who were near. 18 We both have access to the Father through Christ by the one Spirit. 19 So now you are no longer strangers and aliens. Rather, you are fellow citizens with God’s people, and you belong to God’s household. 20 As God’s household, you are built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets with Christ Jesus himself as the cornerstone. 21 The whole building is joined together in him, and it grows up into a temple that is dedicated to the Lord. 22 Christ is building you into a place where God lives through the Spirit.

Good Morning! We Are One in the Spirit!

Peace! Most of us spend our lives chasing this seemingly elusive dream. It seems that the more we work to gain peace, the more turmoil we encounter. In our efforts to find peace, we run into a problem similar to trying to earn our salvation. We cannot earn our salvation: it is a gift from God to all who claim Jesus as their Lord and Savior. We cannot create peace: peace occurs when we turn our troubles and our anxieties to God.

Peace is not a concrete place where we set up the constructs and manage the details. Peace is what fills us when we release control of those things over which we have no control. You’ve heard the saying, “Don’t sweat the small stuff.” This sounds easy enough, but we, as humans, like to control everything in our lives. We more details we choose to manage the more anxiety builds within us squeezing out any place for peace.

Give control to God and find peace! Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

God sent his Son, Jesus, to teach us the way to live in peace. Through the death and resurrection of Christ, our sins have been forgiven so that we might have eternal life. Let go of control. Release your anxiety to God. Rejoice in the peace that fills that void in your heart and soul.

Loving God, Thank You for loving us. You made us and you know us. We love to control things, but this control leads to anxiety. We want to live with peace, but we have trouble letting go. Help us as we struggle through our challenges. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: In Christ alone can we find the peace we seek.
