Morning Devotional 020522 How Far? How Deep?

Liz’s Morning Devotional based upon Upper Room

February 5, 2022

Read Psalm 147:1-11

1 Praise the LORD! Because it is good to sing praise to our God! Because it is a pleasure to make beautiful praise! 2 The LORD rebuilds Jerusalem, gathering up Israel’s exiles. 3 God heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds. 4 God counts the stars by number, giving each one a name. 5 Our Lord is great and so strong! God’s knowledge can’t be grasped! 6 The LORD helps the poor, but throws the wicked down on the dirt! 7 Sing to the LORD with thanks; sing praises to our God with a lyre! 8 God covers the skies with clouds; God makes rain for the earth; God makes the mountains sprout green grass. 9 God gives food to the animals even to the baby ravens when they cry out. 10 God doesn’t prize the strength of a horse; God doesn’t treasure the legs of a runner. 11 No. The LORD treasures the people who honor him, the people who wait for his faithful love.

Good Morning! Praise God who made us all!

It is human nature to try to quantify things. As I enjoyed watching the Opening Ceremony for the 2022 Winter Olympics, the announcers gave us the number of athletes representing each country, as well as, other interesting facts that included many numbers. Sports fans keep track of the statistics of their favorite teams and athletes. Chefs measure their ingredients to assure that their prized recipe comes out correctly. Scientists are in the business of quantifying their work as they conduct investigations and experiments. It’s hard to think of any job or hobby that doesn’t use numbers.

With each generation, we develop new technology that allows us to go further and deeper to discover new things. Our universe is infinite! For each discovery, we realize that there is more waiting just beyond our current comprehension. As Galileo pointed his rudimentary telescope towards the heavens, he discovered things that no person had ever seen like the craters on the Moon and the rings of Saturn. This discovery was groundbreaking for this time. Now, we are launching state-of-the-art telescopes into space with the goal of trying to find the beginning of the universe as we try to quantify the deep recesses of space.

It’s humbling and awe-inspiring to consider how much of God’s world we have yet to discover. The curious part of our human brains will continue to reach beyond our current understanding, but we will not fully comprehend until the end time when we are with our Lord and Savior and all will be made known to us. In the meantime, continue to seek and enjoy all God’s glory that surrounds us.

We can also take great comfort in the understanding that God cares and protects each living thing. The bounty of God’s glorious works is only rivaled by God’s unconditional, never-ending love for us. Because His Eye Is on the Sparrow, I know He watches and cares for me.

Loving God, Thank You for loving us. We love to discover new things, but as those made in Your image, we are never satisfied and we keep working to find new ways to examine our world. Help us take the time to enjoy the world that you gave to us. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen

Thought for the day: Though I cannot fully comprehend God, I trust God’s power and love.

Take time to thank God as you gaze at the world around you! Pastor Liz
