Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room

February 5, 2026

Psalm 111:1-10

1 Praise the LORD! I thank the LORD with all my heart in the company of those who do right, in the congregation. 2 The works of the LORD are magnificent; they are treasured by all who desire them. 3 God’s deeds are majestic and glorious. God’s righteousness stands forever. 4 God is famous for his wondrous works. The LORD is full of mercy and compassion. 5 God gives food to those who honor him. God remembers his covenant forever. 6 God proclaimed his powerful deeds to his people and gave them what had belonged to other nations. 7 God’s handiwork is honesty and justice; all God’s rules are trustworthy 8 they are established always and forever: they are fulfilled with truth and right doing. 9 God sent redemption for his people; God commanded that his covenant last forever. Holy and awesome is God’s name! 10 Fear of the LORD is where wisdom begins; sure knowledge is for all who keep God’s laws. God’s praise lasts forever!

Good Morning! God’s righteousness stands forever.

Let’s make a list! Psalm 111 is in the format of an acrostic poem based on the Hebrew alphabet. It is a hymn of praise, often called an "ABC's of Theology" or a "primer on praise," meant to teach about God’s attributes and actions.

Creating lists of things we need to remember or recall can be very helpful. Throughout his letters, Paul was known for creating lists to aid his churches in their faith journeys.

As a student, I would make lists and create an acronym from the first letters to prevent me from omitting any items. Teachers do this as well. I was never an anatomy student, but I remember my 8th-grade health teacher teaching us to remember the bones of the arm. R U funny, Radius, Ulna, Humorous. Of course, there is ROY G BIV for the order of the rainbow colors.

Just as we were taught to write and send thank-you cards when we received a gift, Psalm 111 is a way to thank/praise God for our abundant blessings. The Lord is full of mercy and compassion.

Redeeming Lord, you bless us abundantly! Thank you for loving us and keeping your covenant to be with us always. Thank you. We love you. In Christ’s name we pray, Amen.

Thought for the day: God’s love and blessings sustain me during difficult times.

Give thanks with a grateful heart! Pastor Liz
