Liz’s Morning Devotional: Scripture selected from Upper Room
Feb. 14, 2025
Jeremiah 17:5-8
5 The LORD proclaims: Cursed are those who trust in mere humans, who depend on human strength and turn their hearts from the LORD. 6 They will be like a desert shrub that doesn’t know when relief comes. They will live in the parched places of the wilderness, in a barren land where no one survives. 7 Happy are those who trust in the LORD, who rely on the LORD. 8 They will be like trees planted by the streams, whose roots reach down to the water. They won’t fear drought when it comes; their leaves will remain green. They won’t be stressed in the time of drought or fail to bear fruit.
Good Morning. Love one another!
7 Happy are those who trust in the LORD, who rely on the LORD.
It sounds so easy! Trust and rely on the Lord! So what’s the problem? The problem comes when we rely on human strength and what we know to solve our challenges. The Pharisees believed that they had everything figured out. For thousands of years, humans trusted the interpretation of scripture by other humans, and they became obsessed with laws and rules that placed some above others at the expense of the weak and outcast.
God sent Jesus to straighten out our mess and teach us a new way. He taught love, forgiveness, and equality, but he was rejected. Jesus turned the ways of the world upside down with crazy words like “the last shall be first.” The religious leaders said, “This can’t be right!”
When we trust and rely on the Lord, our fear and doubt will be replaced with peace, hope, love, and joy. All we have to do is let go of our reliance on earthly ways and ideas and trust God! Those who trust God will develop deep roots that will support them no matter what challenges come.
Loving Lord, Maker of all things! You love us! You sent your son to teach us your way, but we still struggle to trust you. Help us let go of our fears and doubts. Thank you! In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen
Thought for the day: Spread your roots and trust God.
Trust God! Pastor Liz
